  • Birth Reg: Her birth was registered in the RCE image held; vol 8 page 161 Register of Corrected Entries ; in the fourth column of entry no 203 in the register book of births for the year 1902, before the name of the child's mother insert John Patterson Jnr on the authority of a certificate in the form of schedule (F) to the following effect :- In an action relating to the paternity of a female child born at 27 Overgate Dundee on March 24th 1902, at the instance of Poor Euphemia Stewart Johnston, Smalls Wynd Dundee against John Patterson Jnr 46 Peddie Street Dundee, the Sheriff Court of Forfarshire (Dundee District) on October 7th 1903 found that the said child was the Illegitimate Child of the parties aforesaid. October 31st 1903 at Dundee Alex Simpson registrar in the an unknown place registration district.1
  • (Witness) Death: Her mother Euphemia Stewart Johnston died on 22 November 1918 at 18 Park Wynd, Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland; Euphemia Stewart Morris, Jute Spinner (married to James Morris, Harbour Labourer) 1918, November Twenty-second, 6h 20m PM at 18 Park Wynd, Dundee, aged 34 years; parents: William Johnston, Labourer (deceased), Euphemia Johnston, ms Stewart (deceased); cause: influenza 7 days as cert by William Kinnear MD; informant James Morris X his mark Widower present. Wit J G Millar, reg; registered 23 Nov 1918, J G Millar registrar.2

  • (Witness) Anecdote: The boys were orphaned when their parents died within a few days of each other in November 1918. Mary looked after them for the next two years but about a year after she married both boys were sent by 'the family' (not Mary) to Aberlour Orphanage in Aberdeenshire to be looked after. Aberlour's records state that they were admitted to the Orphanage through the Parish Council in Dundee. Mary tried to get them back but was unsucessful. At some point, Danny did come back and lived with Mary and her family for some number of years.4,5

  • (Witness) Anecdote: Danny went into the army. When he was on leave, he would visit his half sister Mary who had brought him up. On one occasion, he took Margaret (NM Dickson) to Woolworths and bought her a dolly that had feathers.4

  • Anecdote*: Mary Nay's father, John Findlay Paterson, made contact with her about the middle of the war. She had a contract from the Harbour Board to cook for the Dockers and this was subsidised by about half of the costs involved. Her father was interested in the salmon that he might be able to use in his shop.4
  • Anecdote: Wanted to buy the house at 39 Step Row and her father bid for it on her behalf as a bid from a relative was more likely to succeed (which it did) - it is not known who owned the property at this time.8

  • (Witness) Anecdote: Ella (Helen) married Sam Evans who was with the submarines during the war. They had no children. Helen lived with Mary Nay during the war years. After the war, Sam and Helen moved to London and had a flat in St John’s Wood. A male relative (of Ella's) would look after her whilst her husband was away (where?) and this person inherited the flat upon Ella's death in 2008. (Is this the cousin in London?) But she died at South Grange Nursing Home in Monifieth and Margaret doesn’t know how or why she ended up there when she had lived much of her life in London.8
