  • Newspaper Article*: She and John Dickson cloth inspector were mentioned in a newspaper article DUNDEE GIRL LOSES HER LIFE IN A PATHETIC BURNING ACCIDENT WHEN HER PARENTS ARE AT WORK.
The toll of burning accidents to children in Dundee, left at home while their parents are at work, is a heavy one.
A very sad case, which had a fatal termination, occurred in West End of city yesterday evening. The victim was Sarah Reid Keating, the nine-year-old daughter of John Keating, rail worker, 322 Hawkhill.
She was acting as the "little mother" to two younger members of the family. Mr and Mrs Keating are both employed in mills, and they left the house shortly before three o'clock. Sarah and her charges were locked in.
The poor girl met with the accident about half-past five. She stood on the fender for the purpose of taking something from the kitchen mantelpiece. Her clothing got too near the grate, and caught fire.
The house is on the ground floor, and Sarah ran into the room adjoining, which looks on to the throughgoing close at 322 Hawkhill.
Her agonised screams attracted the attention of a neighbour, Mrs Mann. On discovering that the door of the house was locked Mrs Mann procured the assistance of John Dickson, factory worker, Taylor's Lane, who smashed the window and went in by this rough-and-ready entrance.
Dickson threw off his coat and wrapped it round the girl whom he transferred to the kindly arms of Mrs Mann. She extinguished the flames, and carried Sarah to her own house upstairs, where she dressed her wounds with oil and cotton wool.
The girl's clothing was practically burned off, and her face and head suffered severely, Dr Martin Smith was called, and he ordered her removal to the Royal Infirmary with all possible speed.
Someone had summoned the Fire Brigade. and, although their services were not required, the presence of Captain Weir and his staff was advantageous. The little sufferer was rolled in a blanket, and Captain Weir took her under his care on the motor tender, which was at the Infirmary gates within a few minutes.
Death relieved little Sarah from her sufferings about nine o'clock last night. on 18 April 1911 at 322 Hawkhill, Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland, .4
  • Name Variation: As of 18 April 1911, Sarah Reid Walch was also known as Keating.5
