  • Will*: He left a will on 28 March 1867; ASSOCIATION FOR THE BETTER ENDOWMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH. BEQUEST BY MR JOHN EDWARD BAXTER.
The object of this association, which was institutet in 1864, is to establish Fellowships and Scholarships in Classics, Philosophy, Natural Science, and other branches of learning, and to augment, if necessary, the incomes of Professors, and to establish new Professorships or Lectureships, and otherwise to promote the efficiency of the University in a seat of learning. Meanwhile, all the efforts of the Association are directed to the foundation of Scholarshipa or Fellowships. Two Followships of the value of £100 each, to be held for three years have already been founded by this Association - one in Philosophy, and the other in Classics. The first of these in permanently endowed, and the second is sustained in the meantime by annual subscriptions.
Mr John Edward Baxter, whose lamented death at an early age we recently recorded, and who received his education at the University of Edinburgh, has bequeathed the reversion of his whole property, at his wife's death, to this Association, unfettered by any conditions, and at the absolute disposal of the Association for such purposes as they may deem proper.
In his lifetime, Mr Baxter, from the state of his health and from his retiring habits, shrank from any active share public matters. The institution of this Association, however, afforded him great pleasure: and he rejoiced in its progress. The taste and culture which he had received at College were quietly indulged, and his practical knowledge of the benefits of a University education, impressed on his mind the importance of raising our seats of learning to a position much more becoming the advancement of our country in wealth and trade.
As Mr Baxter's widow will receive the interent of his estate, Mr Baxter's bequest does not intertere with the comfort of well-being of any who were dependent on him, or who had a claim upon his forethought.7
