Photograph of soldiers of the 78th (Highland) Regiment (Ross-shire Buffs), c. 1860.
Two pioneers of the 78th Regiment of Foot in full dress. The squad consisted of ten men, besides the sergeant, who were selected from soldiers proficient in various trades.
The main task of the pioneer was to lay out the soldiers' camp. When laying out the camp, pioneers would have to dig latrines, fix standpipes, remedy building defects and in general maintain the upkeep of the camp.

Carbon photograph of a private of the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot (Ross-shire Buffs) in Heavy Marching Order, 1860. This is what a foot soldier was expected to wear and carry when engaged in combat. He has an oilskin cover on his feathered bonnet, as worn in wet weather.
Although this is obviously a studio shot, the photographer has gone to some lengths to make the scene as vivid as possible, posing the soldier against a painted backdrop of an outdoor scene, kneeling and preparing to fire.
When the Indian Mutiny broke out in 1857, the 78th had been nearly at the end of its tour of Foreign service, so at the end of the campaign it was one of the first regiments to return home.
