- Anecdote*: Charles Taylor
by Jessie (Taylor) Frizzell
Charles Taylor was bom in Parish of Forfar, Scotland in 1871. He was the fifth of a family of 10. Times were very hard, and as soon as the children could work they had to leave home. So in 1889 Charles and his brother. William, left for Park River, North Dakota, where a brother had gone earlier. They came out on some immigration scheme, as they would not have had the money for fare. They worked there until they heard of the great homestead land to be had in Canada.
In the spring of 1903 he landed in Lumsden. but was delayed there a few days with a sick horse. In due time he went in search of his homestead. He settled on one southwest of what is now Strasbourg. NE 10-24-22.
In 1903 he built a 12 x 12 shack and started to live there. He bought a plow for $27. and broke 10 acres. Charles worked in the harvest time for W. Balfour at Lumsden for $80. Each year more land was broken and more grain planted.
In 1912 he returned to Scotland, and married Margaret Ann Wishart. She had always lived in a city so homestead life was very new to her. She adjusted to the change, and was able to do most things around the farm. They had one daughter, Jessie.
Owing to ill health Charles rented the farm about 1927. but continued to live on it. In 1936 they went to Strasbourg to live, while Jessie and her husband, Lawrence Kerr, operated the farm. Their son Alex, was born in I944. When he was old enough to go to school, they moved to Strasbourg for the winters, as Bdelaue school was closed and the roads were poor. By this time the Taylors were not in good health and they required a lot of attention.
Lawrence Kerr passed away in 1953. at the age of 42.
The Taylors now went to live with Jessie in Strasbourg. Mrs. Taylor passed away in I958, after a four year illness and Charles in 1966. at the age of 95.
The farm is now owned and operated by Robert Kerr, a first cousin of Alex Kerr.
Alex is married to Sylvia Unseth; they have a daughter, Alani. and a son. Lawrence. They live in Regina.
In 197I Jessie married Howard Frizzell. they are both retired and live in Strasbourg.4 - (Spouse) Death: His spouse Margaret Ann Wishart died in 1958 at Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, Canada,
