I work in Christchurch as a lawyer but I arrived at this job later in life having worked for the first part of my life in a variety of occupations but mostly as a railways engine driver. I was made redundant in the 80’s restructurings that went on in New Zealand. I then retrained as a lawyer and after graduation I worked for the engineers union. I then met and married a local member of Parliament who is now a cabinet minister in the Labour led government.
  
  As part of the government’s efforts to restore living conditions I have been involved in community work in a very deprived suburb in her electorate, Aranui. I am the chairman of the Aranui Community Trust. We have been in partnership with central and local government for the past 6 years and big improvements have occurred. I have also been involved in a number of other voluntary organizations and know the sector very well. It can be very hard work, but very enjoyable and satisfying.
  
  We visited Dundee about 11 years ago and last Christmas/New Year. We were impressed with the changes and thought that the city was looking a lot better. We visited the jute museum which I thought was interesting. It is a very nice city and it was good to be back where my family came from. My father was very strong in his views about Dundee and Scotland and his political views were shaped by his experience of poverty, hardship in Dundee and his 12 years as a merchant seaman.
