  • Anecdote*: William was an upholsterer and made two chairs for Margaret when she married in 1947. He married Margaret Kilhooley in about 1933. They had two sons and then Margaret died after giving birth to their daughter Yvonne in 1943. Yvonne was adopted by her Aunt Cissie and presumably went to Rhodesia with her. William also went to Rhodesia at some point after his wife died and may have taken his sons with him. William died fairly young of cancer in about 1953, but this was in Dundee. The two sons, Edward (who is buried in Balgay Cemetery) and Ronald are reputed to have been horse-racing jockeys – we can’t believe that this would be something they were exposed to in Lochee, so wonder if they were in Rhodesia too. But there is a confirmation of the jockey thing in the Courier in August 1956 –
    “Wrong Jockey - Right Horse
When Mr and Mrs Patterson, 9, Findcastle Place, Dundee visited Brighton they went to the races.. The attraction was their son, Ronnie due to ride his second mount of the season. Its name was Grand Reject. They weren't the only Dundonians interested. Many punters in Lochee backed Grand Reject because of its Dundee jockey.
But the horse's name was significant. At the weigh-in Dundee's only jockey was rejected. He was four pounds over weight. The race was given to substitute jockey Paul Tulk. The two most disappointed people in Brighton were Mum and Dad Patterson, but not the Lochee punters, Paul the substitute, rode so well that Grande Reject was first past the post by four lengths. And the odds were 5-1. [August 1956 - Bygone News - Dundee City Council (drawn from local papers of the time); Sept 2009]8
