For 35 years prior to his appointment as Registrar he was connected with the "Courier" and for 21 of these years he acted as chief reporter.
Mr Miller served an apprenticeship to the printing business with Messr Hill & Alexander, who then ocupied an old building overlooking the Wrights' Hall in Key's Close, Nethergate, which many years ago had to make way for Whiteholl Street. Keen to improve his opportunities, he learned Pitman's shorthand without a teacher, and was subsequently appointed assistant reporter on the "Courier". He became its chief reporter in 1866.
In 1887 Mr Miller was appointed Registrar of St Peter's District, and continued in this office until about two years ago, when he retired from active duties and was appointed Consulting Registrar.
