  • (Groom) Marriage*: He married Ann Doig, daughter of William Doeg and Betty Cable, on 21 June 1862 at Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland, ; In 1861 she was a linen weaver living with her parents. Ann stayed at 12 Horsewater Wynd, Forfar, when she married James Waddell. She signed the marriage certificate with her mark 'X'. She was a linen weaver when she married. After banns according to the forms of the Church of Scotland. Marriage pledged on the 15th June 1862.
    Married by Francis Johnstone, Minister of Osnaburgh Street, Independent Chapel, Forfar. Witnesses - Robert Johnston and Margaret Lowe. Registered on the 24th June 1862 at Forfar, Registrar John Webster. James Waddell was at East High Street.1
  • (Deceased) Death*: James Leslie Waddell died on 24 March 1871 at 12 Horsewater Wynd, Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland, , at age 38 James died young at the age of 38 on the 24th March 1871 from Mitral? Disease of the Heart, which James had for many years. James and family were living at 12 Horsewater Wynd when he died. He was a general labourer. The informant was John Waddel his brother who lived at 16 Wellbraehead Forfar at the time. The death was registered on the 25th March 1871 in Forfar and the Registrar was James Burns. Ref. Death 1871, 288, 65.1

  • Note for Web*: James Leslie Waddell WHEN MARRIED STAYED AT EAST HIGH STREET, FORFAR In the 1841 census Agnes Coutie (aged 40) lived in Banks Street, Kirriemuir, with her sons John Brough aged 11, and James aged 9. She was a linen winder. Her sister Ann (aged 35) lived with her; she was also a linen winder. Her husband William Waddell was in Australia having just completed a seven year sentence for stealing horses! In the 1851 census Agnes Waddell (not Coutie as in 1841) was a widow aged 50, and living at 32 School Wynd, Kirriemuir. She was a yarn winder - linen. Her sister Ann Coutie aged 47 was still living with her. She was also a yarn winder - linen. John aged 21 and James aged 19 still stayed with their mother Agnes. They were both hand loom weavers.
