Friends,
After breaking the Dundee back to back-to-back illegitimate kids. The census from 1851 finally answered my prayers, when I found my Alexander Powrie (h/o Christina Shanks) with his maternal grandparents, but his name was recorded Lornie on index! Using an open mind as to spelling was vital.
I need help on my last one. First it starts first with a Jacob Powrie, a forename I've never seen in Scotland and a tree given me about 1830 in Dundalk, Scotland? I've found a village in Ireland by that name, and there is one Canada. Any ideas of names it could really be John or Joseph? Is there any old foundries around Dundee. He and his son were molders in a foundry.
Again the census from 1900 said they were Laundrymen, and looking at the enumeration sheet is hard to read but definitely Foundry not Laundry.
Hello Mary from Oregon
I can pull up two ancestors of mine with connection to Dundee Foundries. If I can successfully put a few details into an understandable scenario, just MAYBE you can see what makes me think that following some old Foundry records, just might, lead you to your Foundry men, JACOB POWRIE and his son.
LILLYBANK FOUNDRY - Owned by my G-Grandfather, WILLIAM WYLIE NEISH in partnership with a Mr. Steele
My G Grandfather would marry Mary Ann Powrie Mudie (Daughter of William Mudie & Janet Knight - (Janet's Parents William Knight & Jean Kidd)
WALLACE FOUNDRY - Owned by a cousin JAMES GUTHRIE ORCHAR (Son of Alexander Orchar and Agnes Kidd) in a partnership with William Robertson (1825-99) took over the Wallace Foundry and the pair went on to develop the well-known firm of textile machinery manufacturers, Robertson & Orchar. This company was responsible for designing and equipping numerous jute and flax mills in E Scotland, as well as supplying machinery internationally.
Here are some names and dates I will mention in my little 'saga' that follows ::
My Great-Grandfather William Wylie Neish - Born 1830 - Macao, Canton, China - Died November 8, 1892. - Murray Hill Hospital Perth, Perthshire
He Married Oct 23. 1873 Broughty Ferry, Scotland
My Great-Grandmother Mary Ann Powrie Mudie - Born April 4, 1854 Monifieth, Angus, Scotland - Died Oct 8. 1886 at 36 Ferry Rd. St.Andrews, Dundee, Scotland
My Grandfather
Francis Wylie Neish - Born 1879 - Dundee - Married Isabella Ford
My Father Albert Guthrie Neish - Born Dundee 1902
I had a few curiosities - ONE - how my bachelor GGrandfather at age 43 came to meet and marry the young spinster of only 19 years of age. - a SECOND curiosity was why my father ALBERT GUTHRIE NEISH was given the middle name of GUTHRIE.
The LILLYBANK FOUNDRY would hold the answer to both mysteries.
I came to learn that my Mudie GG-Grandmother had a cousin - JAMES GUTHRIE ORCHAR. Engineer, industrialist and philanthropist. Born in Dundee, who became draughtsman to at the Lilybank Foundry and I would say he introduce my WILLIAM WYLIE NEISH to his cousin's daughter, the young MARY ANN POWRIE MUDIE. They would have two sons, JAMES GEDDES NEISH & my Grandfather, FRANCIS WYLIE NEISH. Francis would marry Isabella Ford and name my father ALBERT GUTHRIE NEISH.
My G-grandmother died young and my G-grandfather was hospitalized for the remainder of his life after a fall and head injury. The two young sons were then raised my their Mudie Grandparents and, I would think the cousin James Guthrie Orher was very much a part of the household - enough that my Grandfather would honour him when naming his own son Albert Guthrie Neish.
However - those two mysteries now solved - still left me with a THIRD mystery - why did my Mudie Grandparents give the middle name of POWRIE to their daughter Mary Ann?
Was there another connection to the Lillybank Foundry or with my Mudie (nee Knight) GG-Grandmother or with the cousin Orchar?
As you are trying to identify your JACOB POWRIE with a FOUNDRY connection, might there be a tiny thread from my family you might follow? Maybe we can BOTH solve our POWRIE mystery? Have I made my story too complicated?
Best Regards
Barbara Neish

Hello Barbara,
Thank you so much - yes it does preserve the old photos. I was hoping other folk might share their personal websites and we could all collaborate on Tayside families - there must be some crossover!
I have some unknown - probably Ford - children, you'll see them here http://www.genesontheweb.co.uk/p167.htm
The right-hand photo is the one with the unknowns. On the left are my Ford infants - wonderful pram the twins are in! Taken in about 1903 - so about the same era as yours - and, although mine were originally living at Morgan Street (probably just around the corner from your Neishes in Pitkerro Road), they were in Arbroath by 1903.
I was going to contact you too on another matter. I noticed some sad news about Hamish Robertson in this week's local paper and I wondered if you were aware that he died recently. I'm sorry, I haven't the cutting to hand (we are having work done on the house and everything is upside-down at present), but when I get to it, I'll pass it on to you. There was a nice obituary too.
Best regards
Pat

Subject: Hamish Robertson
Oh my Goodness – I was not aware. I had not been in a lot of contact with Hamish this year as he wrote to tell me his wife, Allison, was in hospice care and not much hope of her leaving. I didn’t want to intrude and felt he would keep me up-dated – it confused me that he didn’t. I will wait to see if you locate the Obituary for Hamish – then I will write to his daughter and grand-daughter. The family were always such a great part of my visits to Dundee and, of course, when he was putting his Book together, we were in continuous contact. This saddens me. I would think Allison passed on as well, perhaps before him ? Thanks for remembering my connection to Hamish.
Hugs
Barbara

Subject: A lot to devour to-day
Thanks for the clippings Pat –
I had gone to the Courier site and read one write up there – hadn’t found the clippings though and I am very pleased to have them. Hard on the family to have lost both parents in such a short time. I will write to the girls.
AND – while at the Courier site I was to see that Gordon Small has also died. Another man who contacted me when he was writing a book for the DC Thomson shareholders. I met with him in Broughty Ferry – such an interesting man, fun to meet. My William Neish was an early owner of the Dundee Advertiser and his life was being included in Gordon’s book. It was enterprising of Gordon to have ‘searched me out’, for help, I thought. A fun memory.
Former DC Thomson magazines chief Gordon Small
Gordon Small, former managing editor of women's and teenage magazines with DC Thomson, has died at the age of 78.
A lot to devour to-day . . . alas.
