Subject: Harbour Porters
Hello Pat :
I agree that our folk working as Harbour Porters is a most interesting lead. I can well see an introduction between made between Ann and George.
You might find this snippet about "Harbour Porters" interesting back-ground. My old uncle, Thomas Neish, was one of the earliest businessmen on the Cowgate and he was a Harbour Trustee as well and quite involved with the "business of the day". From what I have collected, I can say that he was a well respected man. I find the history of the Port and Harbour most interesting. Here follows a page from my Neish History, whenThomas fought to add to the wagesfor the Harbour Porters. This, of course,a bitearlier than when our people worked as Harbour Porters.
Cheers - Barbara Neish
PLANK MONEY
Extract from: Dundee warder, 31 August 1841, page 2
‘Harbour Trustees – A letter from the Secretary and Preses [I repeat Preses] of the Society of Harbour Porters was read, requesting the Trustees to grant permission to the Collector of Shore Dues to collect the Porter’s plank money …. Mr Neish gave notice, that at next meeting he will move that the Collector be authorized to collect the same, and that it be done free of expense.’
Extract from: Dundee Warder, 04 September 1841, page 3
‘Harbour Trustees – Porter’s Plank Money'
Mr Neish, pursuant to notice formerly given, rose for the purpose of moving that the Collector of Shore-dues be authorized to collect the porters’ plank money, a rate fixed by the Magistrates and Town Council, by the table of dues dated 2nd July 1807, in which is the following entry ::
“From every vessel when they put on board or take off the plank, in name of plank ale, 1s.”
He (Mr Neish) thought there could be no objection to the granting of the request.
At a former meeting Mr Baxter had objected that it was not legal to do so. But he (Mr Neish) would ask if it was legal for the Trustees to give twenty guineas to the Royal Infirmary, and the same sum towards the erection of a monument to the memory of Telford in Westminster Abbey, as had been done?
The harbour porters were a most respectable body of men, he might say an honour to the harbour, and he thought the Trustees should do every thing in their power to encourage them. He concluded by moving that the Collector be authorized to collect the above plank money, and that it be done free of expense.
Mr Lawson seconded the motion which was unanimously agreed to.”
END
Dear Barbara,
Thank you so much for this background - it really makes things come alive, doesn't it!
We must stay in touch.

Subject: [ANGUS] New Book on Dundee
Hello Everyone
I am pleased to let you all know that a very good friend of mine from West Ferry, has just completed the writing and publishing of his book on Dundee Mariners and that a review of his book appeared in yesterday's (April 10, 2006) Craigie Column of The Courier newspaper. I believe you will admired his attempt to include much history of the harbour, the River Tay and the Mariners and Ships connected to Dundee and The Fraternity over a great span in time, 1100s up to the present year.
My friend is Captain Hamish Robertson - past Box-Master of THE FRATERNITY OF MASTERS AND SEAMEN FOR DUNDEE and now the archivist for that organisation. I personally know that this work is the result of several years of diligently researching old archives, records and newspapers and I am happy for him that the book has now come to fruition. I feel there will something in there for many of us. Here below are the details and how a copy may be obtained. (I shall also copy this message to 2 other lists so some of you may receive it more than once)

Hello again everyone :
The columnist of the Courier has this morning, E-mailed me the review printed there yesterday in connection with Hamish Robertson's book - " Mariners of Dundee-Their City-Their River-Their Fraternity" ; perhaps it will be of added interest to know it is stated that :
"The book, which has photographs, includes a 32-page index of ships and mariners."

Friends,
After breaking the Dundee back to back-to-back illegitimate kids. The census from 1851 finally answered my prayers, when I found my Alexander Powrie (h/o Christina Shanks) with his maternal grandparents, but his name was recorded Lornie on index! Using an open mind as to spelling was vital.
I need help on my last one. First it starts first with a Jacob Powrie, a forename I've never seen in Scotland and a tree given me about 1830 in Dundalk, Scotland? I've found a village in Ireland by that name, and there is one Canada. Any ideas of names it could really be John or Joseph? Is there any old foundries around Dundee. He and his son were molders in a foundry.
Again the census from 1900 said they were Laundrymen, and looking at the enumeration sheet is hard to read but definitely Foundry not Laundry.
Hello Mary from Oregon
I can pull up two ancestors of mine with connection to Dundee Foundries. If I can successfully put a few details into an understandable scenario, just MAYBE you can see what makes me think that following some old Foundry records, just might, lead you to your Foundry men, JACOB POWRIE and his son.
LILLYBANK FOUNDRY - Owned by my G-Grandfather, WILLIAM WYLIE NEISH in partnership with a Mr. Steele
My G Grandfather would marry Mary Ann Powrie Mudie (Daughter of William Mudie & Janet Knight - (Janet's Parents William Knight & Jean Kidd)
WALLACE FOUNDRY - Owned by a cousin JAMES GUTHRIE ORCHAR (Son of Alexander Orchar and Agnes Kidd) in a partnership with William Robertson (1825-99) took over the Wallace Foundry and the pair went on to develop the well-known firm of textile machinery manufacturers, Robertson & Orchar. This company was responsible for designing and equipping numerous jute and flax mills in E Scotland, as well as supplying machinery internationally.
Here are some names and dates I will mention in my little 'saga' that follows ::
My Great-Grandfather William Wylie Neish - Born 1830 - Macao, Canton, China - Died November 8, 1892. - Murray Hill Hospital Perth, Perthshire
He Married Oct 23. 1873 Broughty Ferry, Scotland
My Great-Grandmother Mary Ann Powrie Mudie - Born April 4, 1854 Monifieth, Angus, Scotland - Died Oct 8. 1886 at 36 Ferry Rd. St.Andrews, Dundee, Scotland
My Grandfather
Francis Wylie Neish - Born 1879 - Dundee - Married Isabella Ford
My Father Albert Guthrie Neish - Born Dundee 1902
I had a few curiosities - ONE - how my bachelor GGrandfather at age 43 came to meet and marry the young spinster of only 19 years of age. - a SECOND curiosity was why my father ALBERT GUTHRIE NEISH was given the middle name of GUTHRIE.
The LILLYBANK FOUNDRY would hold the answer to both mysteries.
I came to learn that my Mudie GG-Grandmother had a cousin - JAMES GUTHRIE ORCHAR. Engineer, industrialist and philanthropist. Born in Dundee, who became draughtsman to at the Lilybank Foundry and I would say he introduce my WILLIAM WYLIE NEISH to his cousin's daughter, the young MARY ANN POWRIE MUDIE. They would have two sons, JAMES GEDDES NEISH & my Grandfather, FRANCIS WYLIE NEISH. Francis would marry Isabella Ford and name my father ALBERT GUTHRIE NEISH.
My G-grandmother died young and my G-grandfather was hospitalized for the remainder of his life after a fall and head injury. The two young sons were then raised my their Mudie Grandparents and, I would think the cousin James Guthrie Orher was very much a part of the household - enough that my Grandfather would honour him when naming his own son Albert Guthrie Neish.
However - those two mysteries now solved - still left me with a THIRD mystery - why did my Mudie Grandparents give the middle name of POWRIE to their daughter Mary Ann?
Was there another connection to the Lillybank Foundry or with my Mudie (nee Knight) GG-Grandmother or with the cousin Orchar?
As you are trying to identify your JACOB POWRIE with a FOUNDRY connection, might there be a tiny thread from my family you might follow? Maybe we can BOTH solve our POWRIE mystery? Have I made my story too complicated?
Best Regards

Hello Barbara,
Thank you so much - yes it does preserve the old photos. I was hoping other folk might share their personal websites and we could all collaborate on Tayside families - there must be some crossover!
I have some unknown - probably Ford - children, you'll see them here http://www.genesontheweb.co.uk/p167.htm
The right-hand photo is the one with the unknowns. On the left are my Ford infants - wonderful pram the twins are in! Taken in about 1903 - so about the same era as yours - and, although mine were originally living at Morgan Street (probably just around the corner from your Neishes in Pitkerro Road), they were in Arbroath by 1903.
I was going to contact you too on another matter. I noticed some sad news about Hamish Robertson in this week's local paper and I wondered if you were aware that he died recently. I'm sorry, I haven't the cutting to hand (we are having work done on the house and everything is upside-down at present), but when I get to it, I'll pass it on to you. There was a nice obituary too.
Best regards

Oh my Goodness – I was not aware. I had not been in a lot of contact with Hamish this year as he wrote to tell me his wife, Allison, was in hospice care and not much hope of her leaving. I didn’t want to intrude and felt he would keep me up-dated – it confused me that he didn’t. I will wait to see if you locate the Obituary for Hamish – then I will write to his daughter and grand-daughter. The family were always such a great part of my visits to Dundee and, of course, when he was putting his Book together, we were in continuous contact. This saddens me. I would think Allison passed on as well, perhaps before him ? Thanks for remembering my connection to Hamish.

Thanks for the clippings Pat –
I had gone to the Courier site and read one write up there – hadn’t found the clippings though and I am very pleased to have them. Hard on the family to have lost both parents in such a short time. I will write to the girls.
AND – while at the Courier site I was to see that Gordon Small has also died. Another man who contacted me when he was writing a book for the DC Thomson shareholders. I met with him in Broughty Ferry – such an interesting man, fun to meet. My William Neish was an early owner of the Dundee Advertiser and his life was being included in Gordon’s book. It was enterprising of Gordon to have ‘searched me out’, for help, I thought. A fun memory.

Hello Pat
Perhaps you will remember me and my FORD family connection ? This question is in connection with the ADAMSON branch. My 2nd cousin and I have been trying to unravel a lot of old photos etc left by her Grandmother Elizabeth FORD – my Grandmother is the sister, Isabella FORD (married Francis Wylie NEISH). Elizabeth left a number of photos and post cards etc from a James DEWAR and we wondered if he had married one of the other FORD sisters. We have had no luck finding any of the husbands of the other sisters. To-day I learnt that he did NOT marry a Ford. As the attachment shows, his wife was JOHANA MURRAY ADAMSON DEWAR. With Adamson being a middle (or her maiden name) that might be a clue – making her a Cousin to our Grandmothers? I seem to recall that you have done ADAMSON research. Might you know about a Johana ? A bit about James Dewar below.

This was located on the list from the Castle of Edinburgh as born in Dundee, James Thomson Dewar, service #163127, died (at home) May 19, 1920. Royal Garrison Artillery Gnr.
Two sons Edward and Ronnie Dewar noted on family papers.
May have been born Dundee 1872 – Died May 19,1920
As the 1891 census has him in England & Single – he might have married there after 1891 ? IF that is him.

Hi Barbara,
Yes still tracking Ford folk at this end – but will admit to not having had time recently to investigate some of the wider family! You remember correctly about the Adamson connection – for that is my ‘own’ name ie maiden name. You will find all my folk on my website here www.genesontheweb.co.uk
Now your Johan Murray Adamson Dewar ms Edward is interesting – and I thought she might connect to some of my more far-flung Adamsons – so I tracked her family back a bit, but in fact they came from Fife, not Angus. (I’ve been trying to limit my interest to Adamson folk who have a BMD event in Angus.)
So from the marriage records that I’ve downloaded from ScotlandsPeople (attached) you can see that
Johan Murray Adamson Edward has parents David Edwards and Mary Anne Adamson (m Dundee 1875)
Mary Anne Adamson has parents Alexander Adamson and Agnes Murray (m Elie, Fife 1842)
I haven’t taken it back any further or investigated the family of any of them, but if you have access to Ancestry and/or ScotlandsPeople you might be able to put some flesh on the bones.
Thanks for thinking of me – I’m always fascinated to see how all theses folk fit together (or not!).
Hope this helps. Do keep in touch.

I will have to invest some more time and money to get the connection for Robert Edward to David Edward. Elizabeth told my Aunt that Robert's father was a horse trainer could that also be a coachman? Will look that up tonight.
